Insurance Company is a Midwest-based organization that writes auto, homeowners, and commercial policies for individuals and businesses in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Michigan. The Underwriting Manager will oversee the Territory Underwriting Supervisors, Commercial Underwriters, Personal Lines Underwriters, Staff Underwriter and Personal and Commercial Lines Raters. This position comes with a base salary, profit sharing, and full benefits package.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
· Manage the Underwriting Department (20 hours per week)
· Apply current rates, rules, policies and reinsurance requirements (3 hours per week)
· Review, analyze, catalog and recommend action on all releases from: (5 hours per week)
1. Bureaus
2. Governments
3. Associations and plans
4. Other companies
· Research and advise on formulation of broad underwriting policy such as: (1 hour per week)
1. Addition or deletion of lines, plans, territories, coverages or limits
2. Optimal product mix
· Represent at meetings, conventions, seminars and classes (1.5 hours per week)
· Research and develop new products and services (2 hours per week)
· Develop rating plans, develop and maintain forms and policies and other rating and coverage program activities (.5 hours per week)
· Prepare, maintain and review: (2 hours per week)
1. Agency manuals
2. Underwriting guides
3. Procedure manuals
· Monitor Underwriting programs: (1hour per week)
1. Audit underwriting performance
2. Timely preparation of reports
· Systems Review, development, maintenance (.5 hours per week)
· File rates, loss costs and forms as required by state Insurance Departments (1 hour per week)
· Forward planning and budgeting (1 hour per week)
· Field contacts with agents (.5 hours per week)
· Conduct personnel performance reviews, hiring and terminations (.5 hours per week)
· Regular, predictable attendance
· All other duties as prescribed by your superior
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Education: B.A or B.S with Associate in Underwriting and algebra level mathematics skills or CPCU with algebra level mathematical skills. Trained on or experience with word processing and spreadsheet software.
· Experience: Five of more years as a multi-line underwriter with three of more years in a supervisory capacity. Formal training may be substituted for supervisory experience. Experience in both commercial and personal lines preferred.
· Skills: Willing, able and capable of clearly communicating ideas; leading subordinates; initiating tasks, projects and changes; holding to standards; and coordinating the processes and human resources of the underwriting department.
· Travel: Willing, able and capable of limited overnight travel comprising four weeks per year
· Public Contact: Willing, able and capable to contact and participate as a speaker to agency and other public
· Physical: Able to lift 20 pounds
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
· College degree Mandatory or CPCU
· High School Mandatory
· CPCU Mandatory
· Assoc. in Underwriting Mandatory or CPCU
· Supervisory Management Recommended
· Word Processing Mandatory
